Relocation guide

Your registration (Anmeldung), handled with you

In Germany you must register your address (the Anmeldung) within 14 days of moving in. It is the key that unlocks daily life, and we make it simple.

Send us two things

A photo of the passport or ID of each person moving in, plus your exact move-in date. That is genuinely all we need from you.

We prepare your landlord confirmation

We fill out and sign your Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (the landlord confirmation the Bürgeramt needs) and hand it to you ready. Your name also goes on the doorbell and mailbox, and you fill in nothing.

You register in person

Bring your passport and the signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung you got from us. EU/EEA citizens book a slot at any Essen Bürgeramt, everyone else at the Welcome-Center Essen (Ausländerbehörde) by the main station. Within 14 days of moving in, free of charge.

You are officially a resident

You walk out with your Meldebescheinigung, the registration certificate. From there, everything else opens up.

Our apartments sit in calm, central Holsterhausen and lively Rüttenscheid, minutes from University Hospital Essen, the U-Bahn, Grugapark and the city centre. Each home is set up for real life and real work: fast Wi-Fi, a height-adjustable standing desk, an extra monitor with every cable you need, and a kitchen equipped for proper cooking (yes, including a rice cooker). There are even free weights and a yoga mat. You move in and live, you do not camp.

Anmeldung in Essen: the practical questions

Yes. EU/EEA citizens book online at termine.essen.de for any Bürgeramt. Slots open six weeks ahead, extra ones one week ahead and early each morning; or call +49 201 88-33222. All other nationalities book with the Welcome-Center Essen (Ausländerbehörde), Dietrich-Oppenberg-Platz 1, +49 201 88-38777.

A passport or ID for everyone registering and the completed, signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (our guests get it from us). Moving with family? Bring marriage and birth certificates too. Nothing to fill in beforehand; you leave with a printout of your registration.

14 days from the day you actually move in; the date on the contract does not count. Registering on time is free. If you arrive from abroad, everyone being registered comes along in person.

Only with a German ID card that has the eID function. Newcomers with a foreign passport register in person.

It is the proof that you are registered, handed to you at the appointment. Banks, employers, the tax ID letter, phone contracts and residence permits all rely on it. Extra copies can be ordered online and are posted to you.

Only where the landlord issues a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Hotels and most short-lets do not. Every umbrella.place apartment does, from day one.
